Golden Pizza Shovel
Competition Heating Up
BULLHEAD
CITY – With only two days before the big game, the Domino’s Pizza store in Lake
Havasu City has opened up a $200 lead in its competition against its sister
store in Bullhead City, and it looks like the gloves are off.
Both stores are raising money for their respective high school athletic
departments with the grand finale planned for halftime of this year’s annual
high school football “Golden Shovel” game, which will be played at Thunderbird
Stadium in Bullhead City on Friday.
The Domino’s Pizza store that raises the most for its high school wins the “Golden
Pizza Shovel” and bragging rights until next year’s competition in Lake
Havasu City.
As
in all rivalries, the Domino’s crew in Lake Havasu has spent the week taunting
their adversaries. A band of marauders recently trekked to Bullhead City and
sent a messy message to the Domino’s Pizza store on Highway 95.
“I don’t think they left a window untouched,” said Domino’s Pizza district
manager Sam Medrano. “Pranks are a part of the territory when you talk rivalry
and Havasu left their mark that’s for sure.”
“They don’t like the fact that we’re still going to win,” Bullhead City Domino’s
Pizza general manager Sandy Sleeper said of the recent prank pulled on her
store. “We can always wash the windows, but no amount of shaving cream is going
to help those guys in Havasu overcome our home-field advantage.”
During halftime of Friday’s game between Lake Havasu and Mohave High Schools,
crews from both stores will auction off 200 pepperoni pizzas. The money raised
from Friday’s event will be added to the money raised at the stores throughout
the week to determine a winner.
“Since
the game is in Bullhead City, the crew from Lake Havasu really does have a steep
hill to climb, but Knights fans are loyal, and there will be lots of them at
Thunderbird stadium” Medrano added. “It’ll be interesting to see who finishes on
top.”
“We’re in the lead by $200 going into the final stretch and she thinks we’re
losing,” Lake Havasu City Domino’s Pizza general manager Frank Metsker said in
response to Sleeper’s comments.
“Please, this one’s in the bag,” Metsker added. “The shovel will have a nice,
yearlong vacation in Lake Havasu.” |
